Cubs legend Ernie Banks’ famous phrase “Let’s play two,” should be the Terrapin softball team’s motto this season. The Terps remained undefeated in doubleheaders and extended their winning streak to eight after sweeping Delaware State yesterday.
The Terps’ bats came alive in the 10-1 and 5-1 wins over the Hornets. Game two featured junior Crystal Crews’ first career one-hitter.
Crews (3-2) had a no-hitter going into the top of the sixth when Delaware State’s Ashley Schaaf doubled into right field over the head of freshman right fielder Jenny Belak. Crews struck out four and allowed no earned runs over seven innings, but heaped praise on her teammates.
“It’s a really big plus for a pitcher when she can rely on her defense,” Crews said. “The team behind me played really well, and I’m starting to get more comfortable with them.”
Despite Crews’ solid pitching, the Terps’ offense couldn’t get comfortable and mustered only one run on three hits in the first four innings.
“We just hit a lull in the second game,” coach Gina LaMandre said. “We didn’t really play seven full innings.”
But in the fifth, the Terps (18-10) broke the game open with a two-out rally. Belak singled and scored on senior shortstop Nneka Cardoza’s triple. Sophomore first baseman Lindsay Klein then drilled the ball off Hornets’ (18-16) pitcher Janice Savage well over the netting in center field for her fourth homer of the year. The shot stopped a car on Paint Branch Drive.
“[Savage] kept throwing me consistently outside, and I made up my mind to hit the first pitch,” Klein said.
Sophomore second baseman Keri Lounge and the fans stared in awe as the ball jumped out of the park.
“She did it again,” Lounge said after seeing her teammate’s second shot of the day.
Klein’s first homer of the doubleheader came in the form of a two-run blast in the sixth inning of game one.
Senior designated hitter Lauren Pollock went 2-for-3 with a run scored in game two, while Cardoza added a 2-for-4 performance and a triple to another defensive gem.
The first game was an onslaught of runs off Hornet pitchers Jessica Murray and Tracie Slate — so much so that the game ended in the sixth with Klein’s home run and a nine-run lead.
After threatening in the first two innings, Lounge hit a two-run single to put the Terps on the board in the third. Junior catcher Nikki Smith singled in a run, while Pollock and junior center fielder Natalie Grossman each hit sacrifice flies to increase the lead to 5-1.
In the fourth, Lounge hit her third homer of the season, a two-run shot off Murray after a Cardoza RBI base-hit. When Klein went yard in the sixth, the Terps exceeded the eight-run rule and the game ended, 10-1.
After a 2-for-5 day, Lounge has hit three home runs in her last seven outings. After failing to get on base in the second game, her hitting streak of six games was snapped. The streak is the second-best of the season for the Terps, behind Klein’s nine-game stretch to start the season.
Senior pitcher Jessica Aditays (5-2) pitched another stellar game, striking out eight Hornets and allowing one earned run and no walks in six innings. She now has 52 strikeouts on the year.
“[Aditays and Crews] both throw the ball very well,” LaMandre said. “They kept the hitters contained and got big outs for us.”
The victories improved the Terps’ record at home to 7-1. Their 18-10 record is two games better than last year’s pace, which ended in a 33-27 season.
The Terps will travel to Charlottesville, Va., this weekend to take on 14-19 Virginia in a three-game set.
