Nugent, who had a career record of 89-80-3, coached at three schools over 17 years. From 1959 to 1965, Nugent led the Terps to a 36-34 record.
While at Virginia Military Institute, Nugent created the I formation, one of the most common formations in football. The I formation has two running backs lined up directly behind the quarterback and is one of the basic sets for any football team.
Before coaching at Maryland, Nugent was the head football coach at Florida State, where he coached actor Burt Reynolds and football analyst Lee Corso.
Nugent was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Ind. as an innovator of the game.
