If you feel like upgrading your Monday evenings or “loose Tuesdays” from the traditional College Park bar scene, I’ve got an idea for you.
Pack up a few friends and head to the H Street Country Club in D.C., for a night filled with great food, competition and maybe even a hole in one.
The H Street Country Club is one of the city’s barely hidden gems. Named one of D.C.’s best bars by Washingtonian magazine in 2013, it features quality Mexican cuisine, an award winning mixed drink and tequila menu, and minigolf; yes, minigolf.
Even if you’re not of age, this place is worth putting on your to-do list for once you’re legal. While the food itself may be the star of the show, dinner on Monday and Tuesday nights includes a free round of minigolf that’s only $7 extra if you just want to stop in and have a drink or two.
H Street is home to the only indoor minigolf course in all of D.C., and its obstacles are city landmarks like the Capitol and Ben’s Chili Bowl. For a minigolf lover like me that’s more than enough reason to stop by.
Other games at the country club include shuffleboard, skeeball and big buck hunter. I’m not sure about the last one, but skeeball was my thing in middle school. You’ll definitely see me there at some point.
For a place this quirky, the drinks and eats are pretty well priced. Check out the website for happy hour specials that include $3 Dos Equis and $1 tacos with a two drink purchase. If you’re feeling preppy on Thursdays, wear plaid for an additional discount on drinks and golf.
To get to the H Street Country Club, take the 104 Metro bus from Stamp to the College Park Metro station and board a Green Line train toward Branch Avenue. Transfer at Fort Totten and get on the Red Line toward Shady Grove before getting off at Union Station. The one-way trip is about 25 minutes and costs $2.75 with your SmarTrip card.
It’s about a mile from Union Station to the Country Club, so if it’s late or raining you may want to take a cab. On a nice day just head toward 8th street and use the stroll to warm up for your epic afternoon on the links.
