Terrapin softball coach Laura Watten will not return to the team for 10th season, the athletic department announced yesterday.

Watten’s contract term expires at the end of the month, and according to an athletic department press release, the veteran coach will not seek an extension because she “has decided to pursue other opportunities and to spend more time with family.”

The release also mentioned that the Terps would begin a national search for Watten’s replacement immediately.

In nine seasons in College Park, Watten compiled a record 280-228 and took the Terps to three NCAA regionals. This past season, however, the Terps finished 11-35, easily the worst mark in Watten’s tenure.

“We appreciate Laura’s contribution to the softball program over the past nine years,” said Maryland director of athletics Kevin Anderson. “We wish her the very best in her future endeavors.”
