University Police detectives are investigating a string of thefts in North Campus dorms that have occurred since Jan. 30.

Officers responded to eight thefts in Centreville and Cumberland halls on Friday that happened between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m., according to a university safety notice.

The suspect, who was described in the notice as a black man in his mid-20s to early 30s, stole personal personal property from unlocked rooms. He was wearing all black and carried two black or navy bags, according to the notice, and had “a rough complexion and spoke with a foreign accent.”

On Jan. 30, police arrived at Denton Hall in response to four missing property reports between 8:45 a.m. and 10 a.m., University Police spokeswoman Sgt. Rosanne Hoaas said.

A black male suspect entered four unlocked dorm rooms and stole money and electronic devices, Hoaas said. Police do not know if the suspects in Friday’s incidents and the Jan. 30 incidents were the same person, Hoaas said.

In both reports, students living in the dorms approached the suspect, who then left, according to the safety notice. The encounters were “non-confrontational,” police said.

In an email to South Campus residents on Friday, Resident Life Assistant Director Donna Metz said the suspect related to the Friday incident was also seen at Stamp Student Union.
