Lime Fresh Mexican Grill’s College Park location, on Route 1 next door to Bagel Place, closed Sunday.
Another College Park restaurant has shut its doors — taco chain Lime Fresh Mexican Grill closed down its Route 1 location less than a year after opening.
The restaurant closed Sunday, and on Monday morning, Lime’s doors remained locked and no one answered the phone. The College Park location was also removed from the company’s location listings.
Andy Hepp, a company spokesman, confirmed the College Park location was shut down but declined to say why.
It isn’t unusual for restaurants to close down suddenly, said city economic development coordinator Michael Stiefvater.
“With clothing stores, they have a sale to get rid of the clothing, but not with restaurants,” Stiefvater said. “Roti just closed on a random Saturday, and ChiDogO’s closed and there were chains on the door the next day.”
Stiefvater said he was surprised that Lime closed, as the restaurant seemed to be doing well. It opened in October 2012 next door to popular breakfast spot Bagel Place.
“I heard people say it was good and they enjoyed the food,” he said. “It seemed moderately crowded.”
Sophomore education major Caroline Weber and her friends went to Lime almost every week.
“It was definitely one of my favorite restaurants on Route 1,” Weber said. “Any time I was in there, it was very crowded and there was always a line.”
Lime’s parent company, Ruby Tuesday, hasn’t fared well in recent years. The company struggled to rebound from 2009’s recession, and in January, Ruby Tuesday reported it expected steep financial losses for the fiscal year. It saw a $15.1 million loss in stock revenue for the first quarter and reported a $2 million loss for the same quarter last year.
In response, newly appointed CEO JJ Buettgen said the company planned to close several of its restaurants, both in the Ruby Tuesday chain and the company’s other chains, which include Lime, Marlin & Ray’s, Wok Hay and Truffles Grill.
The company acquired Lime in April 2012 and announced plans to open 30 Lime locations by 2014. Following net losses, however, Ruby Tuesday has been quick to shut down Lime locations nationally.
Customers were greeted with locked doors and a “closed” sign at Lime’s year-old Clarendon, Va., location days after the January announcement. The last of Lime’s three Georgia locations closed in May after about a year of business each.
Locally, Lime followed several other fast food Mexican restaurants out of College Park. California Tortilla, which formerly occupied Lime’s space, left the area in November 2011 due to leasing problems. And Austin Grill Express, which offered a similar taco-centric menu out of The Varsity’s ground floor, closed in April 2012 during a management reorganization higher up in its parent company.
“I’m really just surprised,” Weber said. “It seemed like they were doing good business.”
