A dominant second half culminated in a 1-0 win for North Carolina men’s soccer over North Carolina State Saturday.The Tar Heels (2-1-2) outshot the Wolfpack (3-2-1) 9-3 in the second half and were led by sophomore Bill Dworsky’s third goal in two games. North Carolina has dominated their in-state rivals since 1997, with a 10-1-3 record over that span. The Tar Heels joined Boston College and Virginia Tech in getting their first ACC win of the season.
n Mountaineers topple another ACC foeNo. 13 West Virginia knocked off a second high-ranked ACC opponent in their non-conference slate this weekend, beating No. 5 Duke on Saturday just eight days after beating the Terrapins. The mostly defensive battle finished 1-0 as Mountaineer freshman Paul Paradise knocked in a rebound off an Andy Wright shot in the 76th minute. West Virginia’s defense proved itself once again, holding the Blue Devils scoreless despite being outshot 15-9 and allowing nine corner kicks for Duke.
n No. 19 Virginia Tech takes twoDown a goal with just over six minutes remaining, No. 19 Virginia Tech launched an improbable comeback, scoring twice to defeat No. 23 Tulsa 3-2 Friday. Sunday, the Hokies (5-1-0) followed that performance by winning their second game of the Level 3 Golden Hurricane Classic, defeating Oral Roberts 3-1. Virginia Tech is now on a five-game winning streak.
n Wake Forest holds firm to perfect recordIt took until the 78th minute, but No. 1 Wake Forest maintained their flawless record (5-0-0) by beating Louisville 1-0 Saturday. Junior Marcus Tracy put in a goal off a corner kick for the game’s only score.
n Virginia takes overtime win over St. John’sDespite outshooting St. John’s 13-3 in regulation, No. 6 Virginia could not find the back of the net until the 97th minute in Sunday’s 1-0 victory.
