Thankfully, there is a sit-down place you can take your parents to on Route 1 that doesn’t have pizza as its main fare (sorry not sorry, Ledo). There’s a nice place with noodles on the menu you can go to on a date that isn’t bland (Ten Ren’s Tea Time Inc) or another chain (raise your hand if you were sick of Noodles & Company by sophomore year). There’s an actually tasty place that challenges your tastebuds and perceptions of Asian cuisine (I’m not talking about Shanghai).
The answer for all your sit-down woes and Asian food cravings is Pho Thom, conveniently located just across from the CVS parking lot next to Slices Pizza Co.
Pho Thom mashes together Vietnamese and Thai cuisine for a menu that consistently blows my mind each time I pop into the eatery. There’s pho galore, but there are also traditional Thai dishes, such as pad thai, and noodles and rice and curries. For those of us that feel the burning desire to douse everything we eat with hot sauce and chili powder (guilty), Pho Thom gives some dishes a spice rating — three red chilies is the hottest, two is medium spicy and so on.
The taste lit up my mouth with just the right blend of spiciness and mixes of Thai curries. It’s spicy. It’s warm. It’s Asian food that isn’t bland and sits in your stomach feeling leaps and bounds better than any Chinese takeout.
It’ll run you a little more than $10 for a meal but think about it: It’s the only good Asian food place and the best sit-down Asian restaurant on Route 1. Seriously, the mildly higher price for the only good Asian food is worth it. The seating area isn’t as cramped as Aroy Thai’s, and you get two cuisines for the price of one.
Not even Chipotle is better than that.
