Police cars swarmed around the McDonalds on the 8400 block of Route 1 after receiving reports of an alleged shooting, which reportedly involved officers.
A 21-year-old man was arrested and transported to a hospital last night after allegedly stealing a police cruiser and crashing into a wall outside McDonalds on Route 1, officers said.
The suspect, Andre McKoy, was charged with attempted second degree murder of a police officer, first degree assault, and malicious destruction of property, as well as other offenses, police said at a press conference today. Officers also said he was in “good condition” as of around 6:30 a.m. after being transported to a local hospital with several gunshot wounds.
Officers received a call from the suspect’s mother around 10:21 p.m. yesterday, said Prince George’s County Police Assistant Chief Kevin Davis at a news conference Friday.
“The suspect’s mom called 911 from her home on Lakeland Road saying her son was on PCP and acting irrationally in her town home,” he said.
Davis said McKoy allegedly walked his mother out of their house at gunpoint when they encountered a police officer armed with a shotgun. McKoy’s mother reportedly ran away when McKoy “engaged in a gun battle with [a] police officer,” Davis said, adding he believed the officer “did strike the gunman with a shotgun.”
McKoy, however, remained unaffected, Davis said. Officers then reportedly shot him with a tazer, which had no effect – a common reaction for those on PCP, he said. McKoy then allegedly sprinted up Route 1 and displayed what officers believed was the same gun he previously used.
Although officers reportedly shot McKoy again, it had no effect, Davis said. McKoy then allegedly took his pants off and attempted to steal a police car. Officers attempted to shoot McKoy with a tazer again, Davis said, but McKoy remained unaffected. He reportedly got into another police car and crashed it into a small brick wall in front of McDonalds.
There is “no further danger to [the] community,” according to a university alert sent around 11:30 p.m. Limansky said the campus was not in lock down last night.
Several people said they heard shots fire Thursday night and saw several police cars along Route 1.
“I heard like five shots go off and then I saw everyone in McDonald’s running and scattering,” said Hanif Zarrabi, a resident of University View.
Zach Roberts, a bouncer at Looney’s Pub, said he also heard shots.
“I heard some gun shots from over behind the fire department, then about a minute later I saw a cop … running along in front of the fire department,” Roberts said.
In May, a 21-year-old College Park man named Andre McKoy was charged with allegedly trespassing on school grounds, according to court records. His trial is set for August. It is unclear if the court documents are referring to the suspect.
Davis said this is the fourth police shooting this year.
