Coach Mark Turgeon shouts directions to his team during the Terps’ 91-55 exhibition win over Southern New Hampshire at Xfinity Center on Nov. 6, 2015.
The Terrapins men’s basketball team will host Georgetown in College Park for the first time in nearly 42 years on Tuesday.
Back in the day, the two teams had quite the rivalry. They played against each in all but two years from 1947 to 1980, with their home-and-home series ending in the 1970s. Since 1980, the teams have only met three times, most recently in 2008’s Old Spice Classic.
The Terps, who lead the all-time series 36-27, clearly aren’t afraid to embrace the history.

Let’s take a look at the last time the Hoyas traveled to College Park on Dec. 11, 1973.
Since that meeting, Maryland’s won has won its first and only national championship, made two Final Fours, and appeared in the NCAA tournament 23 times, according to Sports Reference. In that same time, Georgetown’s claimed one National Championship in two Final Four trips, and made 29 appearances in the NCAA tournament, also per Sports-Reference.
In the past 41 years, the Terps and the Hoyas have only played each other nine times, with seven games taking place at neutral sites and two at Georgetown’s home court.
Other facts to note:
In December 1973, Richard Nixon was president, although the Watergate investigation would lead to his resignation in August 1974. There have been seven presidents since the last time Georgetown basketball visited College Park.
Maryland coach Mark Turgeon was 8 years old. Georgetown’s John Thompson III was 7. The two coaches in that game, Lefty Driesell and John Thompson Jr., are now 83 and 74, respectively.
“The Sting,” starring Robert Redford and Paul Newman, was the highest-grossing film released in 1973. “The Exorcist,” part of which was filmed on Georgetown’s campus, was fourth.
The 1973 game took place in the Cole Field House, while Tuesday’s matchup will be held in the Xfinity Center.
