You may have listened to the great songwriters of swing and jazz when you were younger with your grandparents or even your parents, or maybe you’ve been unfortunate enough to have never heard them at all. But whatever your musical tastes may be, you most likely won’t complain after listening to the music of smooth crooner Michael Buble.
A 25-year-old Canada native, Buble’s style is reminiscent of past eras of songwriting and performing. He soaks in the sounds of Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra to create a unique sound that is enjoyable to virtually anyone’s ears. He combines romantic lyrics with smooth vocals to create a magical, seemingly effortless sound. You would never guess Buble wasn’t a singer straight out of the Rat Pack era.
Buble credits his musical talents to his grandfather, who opened up the wonderful world of music to him. It was his grandfather who also pushed Buble to learn the music of the greatest artists of his own era. After Buble started playing the timeless classics, he realized this is what he had been waiting for and that he was going to be doing it for the rest of his life.
Buble’s musical catalog includes not only original songs but a wide array of covers. On his three full-length, major-label albums, he covers songs of legendary artists such as The Beatles, Marvin Gaye, Louis Armstrong, Van Morrison, The Drifters and, of course, Frank Sinatra, all the while adding his own special flair to each rendition. Buble has fun and isn’t afraid to show it.
Buble is living, breathing and singing songs from a musical era our generation missed. But don’t let the time period fool you; Buble is a hit you surely don’t want to miss.
Michael Buble performs tonight at DAR Constitution Hall. Tickets range from $35 to $245; doors open at 8 p.m. For more information, call (202) 628 -1776.
