Los Angeles’ Post Malone has — at the moment of this writing —3,519 Twitter followers, 990 tweets (mostly promotional retweets) and three songs on his SoundCloud page (two originals and one production credit). He has a gold grill, dreadlocks and, if his Instagram account is any indicator, a serious propensity toward sweatbands and extravagantly ripped skinny jeans. He is also, however briefly, the greatest white rapper alive.
The origin story of the greatest white rapper alive is still a bit murky — so far, all I know is that he’s buddies with Atlanta producer FKi and fellow up-and-coming Georgian Key!. Naturally, he’s into weed, fashion and basketball. Beyond that, what I can tell you with absolute certainty is that the greatest white rapper alive has 100 percent made his career with this tribute to former NBA superstar and current(?) child support evader Allen Iverson, who is not the best shooting guard of all time but certainly among the top five.
“White Iverson,” an FKi-produced, squeaky-clean Certified Banger™ to the nth degree, jacks Dej Loaf’s flow by way of “Try Me” and appropriates it into an NBA-centric struggle-rap anthem. It’s been a decent week for references to this iconic press conference, and besides the practice ad-libs, Malone tosses in some sneakerhead jargon and compares himself to Kevin Durant, James Harden, Anthony Davis and Michael Jordan — not bad for a white guy from Dallas, which hasn’t really produced a NBA talent of merit since LaMarcus Aldridge and has also produced Chris Bosh, whose merits are the subject of considerable debate.
In addition to “White Iverson,” Malone’s SoundCloud page also features “That’s It,” a low-key party joint that suggests the greatest white rapper alive might have some staying power. Both songs are solid lyrically and virtually gimmick-free, which should — but probably won’t — help Malone avoid the same “oddball” label attached to onetime collaborator iLoveMakonnen.
Also of note: “White Iverson” builds a serious case for integrating “saucin’” into the national lexicon, making it the first time I’ve heard the term from someone with more street cred than a high school ice hockey player.
