Brandon Ross took the majority of first-team snaps at running back during training camp, but Albert Reid also worked frequently with the starters.
So Tuesday, Edsall made official what had been expected: Ross will be the Terps’ starter Saturday against Florida International, but he won’t hesitate to use Reid in any situation. Still, that was news to Ross.
“You know, he actually never really told me,” he said. “It’s just how we’ve been running things through camp. I just kind of put myself out there, I wanted to be the starting guy.”
Ross also exited last year’s camp as the Terps’ starter, but an injury kept him out early in the season and paved the way for Reid to start the season opener against William & Mary.
Edsall also reiterated that Kenneth Goins would start at fullback. Tyler Cierski, who was listed as the starter when training camp began Aug. 4, had been out the last several weeks with a calf injury.
“Tyler does have an injury and [Goins] was the backup and he was pushing Tyler even when Tyler was healthy,” Edsall said. “We feel good about [Goins].”
How often the Terps will use a fullback in their offense isn’t certain, but Goins, who has also taken reps at tailback, gives the team some options.
“Kenny’s a young man who’s veryversatile,” Edsall said. “He can block, he can catch out of the backfield and he’ll play on special teams.”
Drew Stefanelli will serve as Goins’ backup.
