University of Maryland students working toward a journalism degree will soon be eligible to receive an award from the Capital Gazette Memorial Scholarship Fund, which was created after five people were killed in a mass shooting in the publication’s newsroom Thursday.
Tronc, the paper’s owner, announced that the award will be presented annually to select journalism students at this university to honor the victims, according to The Baltimore Sun.
Robert Hiaasen, Gerald Fischman, John McNamara, Rebecca Smith and Wendi Winters were all killed in the attack, which police said was specifically directed toward the newsroom. Three of them had ties to this university — Hiaasen was a lecturer in the journalism college, and Fischman and McNamara were alumni.
Jarrod Ramos, 38, has been charged with five counts of first-degree murder in the attack. The Capital had written previously about a criminal harassment charge against him, The Sun reported, after which he filed a lawsuit against the paper. The Capital’s former editor and publisher said Ramos had harassed them for years, The Sun also reported.
