By Aaron KrautStaff writerFootball fans who walked into the University Book Center in recent weeks looking to purchase a No. 19 Jordan Steffy Terrapins football jersey left scratching their heads. The only quarterback jersey option was the No. 12 of Josh Portis, who had been named as the No. 2 quarterback behind Steffy by coach Ralph Friedgen at the conclusion of fall camp before being declared academically ineligible for the season. According to University Book Center manager Mike Gore, the decision on which football uniforms to sell is not made by the Book Center itself. The store puts in stock whatever jerseys Under Armour, the company that manufactures all university football gear, ships to them.Gore said the Portis jersey was pulled off the shelf after his season-long suspension was announced before last Saturday’s game.Shawn Nestor, head of media relations for the football team, confirmed that Under Armour makes the decision on which players’ jerseys to produce and sell and that nobody within the university’s athletics department had any part in deciding to go with the Portis jersey.Steffy himself had little to say on the matter when asked about the presence of Portis’ jersey but not his own.”I’m not gonna comment on that,” Steffy said, while cracking a small grin.Steffy was not the only one to notice the jersey selections. Students were also aware of the interesting stock choice.”I thought it was weird: They had been talking about Steffy the whole time, but I only saw people with Portis jerseys,” said sophomore letters and sciences major Bryan Love.Sophomore biochemistry major Kyle Slavin actually bought one of the Portis jerseys from the Book Center the day before the game. He was as surprised as anyone to see sophomore quarterback Chris Turner come into the Villanova game when Steffy went off the field with cramps.”I figured to see Portis there; I’ve been hearing a lot about him,” Slavin said.Still, Slavin decided he would just have to stick with his $64.99 purchase.”I think I’m going to wear it; it’s still a Maryland jersey, and the suspension is Portis’s problem, not mine,” Slavin said.akrautdbk@gmail.com.
