The University Commuters Association is revamping itself in an effort to gain more members and increase the group’s presence on the campus.

University Commuters Association President Jahantab Siddiqui is working with other executive board members to bring a 21-member general assembly to the association, hoping that giving it a more organized forum to discuss commuter student issues will help attract members.

Commuters constantly struggle with having a strong presence on the campus and Siddiqui said revamping the association would give them a voice.

Following budget cuts several years ago, the commuter affairs office was downsized from a staff of 15 to one.

Of the nearly 15,000 commuter students on the campus, there are only 40 members in the commuter association, Siddiqui said.

Sana Shamim, the vice president of marketing for the association, said the organization needs more members to be taken seriously.

A commuters association general assembly has not existed since fall 2003.

The assembly will be responsible for being a connector between commuter students and the university, Siddiqui said and decide the association’s stance on different commuter issues.
