As the summer begins to wind down, the specifics of the Terrapins men’s basketball schedule for the 2013-14 season are starting to clear up.
Through the release of schedules from other teams, networks, tournaments and reports, the dates of 10 Terps nonconference games, two ACC games and a trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands for Paradise Jam tournament.
Earlier this week, Morgan State’s athletic website listed a Nov. 29 game against the Terps at Comcast Center on the Bears’ schedule. Then Wednesday, an Abilene Christian spokesman said the Terps would host the Wildcats on Nov. 13, according to a Washington Post report.
Both Morgan State and the Terps will play in the Paradise Jam from Nov. 22 to Nov. 25, which is four days before the Bears visit College Park. The two squads are on different sides of the bracket in the tournament, so there’s a slim chance they’ll meet in the Virgin Islands. But if they do, they’ll end up playing each other in back-to-back games, a rarity in college basketball.
The scheduled contest against Abilene Christian represents another unique situation. The Wildcats are transitioning to Division I, meaning the game won’t count against the Terps RPI, a device the NCAA tournament selection committee uses to rank teams.
In other words, the Terps will be able to host a less experienced opponent, which gives the team a good chance to earn a comfortable victory and the school a chance to make revenue off the event, all without any risk of the game hurting the team’s postseason resume.
The Post‘s Alex Prewitt also reported the Terps will play Boston on Dec. 21 and North Carolina Central on Dec. 31.
With the Morgan State and Abilene Christian matchups released, the Terps have already committed to 11 nonconference games and could announce one more. Regardless of adding another opponent or not, which will likely be home contests against mid-major opponents, the Terps nonconference slate appears much tougher than last season’s.
They open against perennial contender Connecticut at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Nov. 8 and play games against Oregon State (Nov. 17), George Washington (Dec. 8) and Ohio State (Dec. 4) before beginning conference play.
The ACC typically releases the specifics of its regular-season basketball schedule in mid-to-late August, but the Terps learned two of their conference game dates when ESPN released its Big Monday schedule last week.
Coach Mark Turgeon’s squad will visit Virginia on Feb. 10 and host ACC newcomer Syracuse on Feb. 24.
