A home matchup against Ohio State and road trips to Wisconsin, Penn State and Michigan highlight the Terrapins football team’s first Big Ten schedule in 2014, which was announced Thursday.
The Terps will play their first game in the Big Ten on Sept. 27, 2014 at Indiana. The first Big Ten game at Byrd Stadium will feature Ohio State a week later on Oct. 4. After a bye week, the Terps host Iowa on Oct. 18 before heading out on a two-game road swing at Wisconsin and Penn State on Oct. 25 and Nov. 1, respectively. After another bye week, they will host Michigan State on Nov. 15, travel to Michigan on Nov. 22 and finish their season at Byrd Stadium against Rutgers on Nov. 29.
“It is great to know that we have our schedule for our inaugural season in the Big Ten,” coach Randy Edsall said in a release. “This is a very attractive and challenging schedule and is one our coaching staff, student-athletes and fans will look forward to playing in 2014.”
The 2014 season will mark the first time the Terps will play Ohio State, Iowa and Wisconsin. The last time the Terps played Indiana was 1935, and the Hoosiers have won both meetings between the teams. The matchup with Penn State is the first between the schools since 1993, and the Nittany Lions own a 35-1-1 advantage all-time. The Terps are 1-4 all-time against Michigan State, and the teams’ last meeting was 1950. The Terps are 0-3 against Michigan, and the teams haven’t met since 1990. Rutgers and the Terps have met recently in 2007 and 2009, and the Terps lead the series 5-4.
The Terps’ opponents finished 2012 with a 60-41 record. Ohio State finished 12-0, but the Buckeyes were ineligible for postseason play, and Wisconsin captured the conference championship.
In late April, the Big Ten’s division alignment was announced.
