The Terrapins men’s lacrosse team has lost a significant contributor to its last two national championship appearances.

Kevin Warne, who served as the team’s defensive coordinator the past two seasons, was named Georgetown’s head men’s lacrosse coach on Tuesday.

Warne becomes the 12th head coach in the Hoyas’ 50-year history. He will take over for Dave Urick, who won 223 games the past 23 years.

“Kevin’s commitment to student-athlete welfare and his passion for the game makes him the perfect person to take over our lacrosse program at this time,” Georgetown director of intercollegiate athletics Lee Reed said in a news release. “He is considered to be one of the top young assistants in the country and he has a terrific track record of success as an assistant coach, including appearances in the last two national championship games.”

Warne inherited a veteran defense when he arrived in College Park in 2011. And despite significant losses last season, he helped a Terps defense that ranked ninth nationally in goals allowed (7.94 per game).
