Maryland women’s basketball forward and Greece National Team member Eleanna Christinaki will return to Europe to play professionally, ending her Maryland career after just 22 games, the team announced.
Christinaki will play for the Greek national team this summer before turning pro in the fall.
“We are excited for Eleanna that she will be living out her dream to become a pro,” coach Brenda Frese said in a press release. “We appreciate all that she has meant to our team and program. We wish her all the best.”
After leaving Florida following a suspension, Christinaki transferred to Maryland in December 2016.
She became eligible this past December and averaged 11.8 points and 4.6 rebounds as a Terp. Christinaki scored a career-high 32 points in her debut against Coppin State but struggled with consistency, being held to single-digit point totals in nine games.
She shot 36.6 percent from the field and 32.3 percent from beyond the arc as a Terp, ending the year as an All-Big Ten honorable mention.
“I am so thankful for everyone at Maryland for the opportunity to be a part of this program,” Christinaki said. “I want to especially thank Coach Brenda for being a great and supportive coach in every way. She is a coach that listens to her players and wants them all to be successful. … This team will be very good next year and I will be watching.”
