The Terrapin women’s soccer team is willing to throw out the scouting reports and start concentrating on what has kept it out of the win column recently: its inability to score.
The Terps will kick off their weekend with the Stony Brook Seawolves, who come to Ludwig Field with a 4-1-1 record and twice as many goals as the Terps through their first six games (14-7).
“We’re not placing a lot of emphasis on them,” Terp coach Brian Pensky said. “We’re focusing more on ourselves.”
Regardless of who they’re are playing, the Terps needs to start putting the ball into the net when they get the opportunity.
The Terps have been scoreless in their last two games (both 1-0 losses) and with the exception of a six goal onslaught against UMBC, the Terps have scored just one other goal all year.
“We don’t care who scores, it’s just got to come from somewhere,” Pensky said.
Midfielders Melissa Hornfeck and Emily Maynard looked to turn the corner for the Terps’ offense in the UMBC game, but they, along with most of their teammates, have struggled to get quality shots off in the last two games.
Another recent issue for the Terps has been shoddy defense. The results don’t reflect the abundance of scoring chances they have given to opponents, who have combined for 45 shots in the past two games.
Senior goalie Nikki Resnick has been stellar in the net, preventing all but two of those 45 shots from reaching the back of the net. But even the team’s captain can’t be expected to perform flawlessly when she has to make double-digit saves each night.
Tonight’s game will be the 400th at Ludwig field in the women’s team’s 20-year history. The Terps have historically been very strong at home, but this year they are just 1-1-1.
Sunday they will travel to George Mason to play the Patriots in their final game before conference play begins next week.
“There’s no question this is a big weekend for us,” Pensky said. “We’re looking to get some results this weekend and head into the ACC schedule feeling good about ourselves.”
