Some may know Brendan Canty as the drummer from legendary post-punk band Fugazi, which hails from Washington and has been on indefinite hiatus since 2002. However, Canty’s side project since 2004 has been Burn to Shine, a series of documentaries released by his DVD label, Trixie. The documentaries have been shot in Washington, Chicago and Portland.
Brendan Canty will be stopping by the Stamp Student Union to screen the third installment of Burn to Shine on Thursday. The film will be screened at 8 p.m. with a question-and-answer session following the screening.
The concept behind Burn to Shine is simple. A group of bands, which call each area home, perform one song on camera, live and unmastered, in a house that is about to be demolished. The DVDs have been widely distributed among the independent rock community, and portray some of indie rock’s most popular bands.
The latest DVD features a house in Portland being graced by the presence of Sleater-Kinney, The Shins, The Decemberists, The Thermals, The Gossip, Mirah and more. The raw, intimate setting of the film makes these exclusive performances more exciting for the viewer, especially since bands such as Sleater-Kinney are now broken up.
Past films have included Wilco, Tortoise, Q and Not U, Ted Leo and The Evens. These lineups have made the film a must-have for many indie rock enthusiasts.
