Former Terrapin men’s basketball player LaRon Cephas died yesterday of an apparent seizure at the age of 29.
A Terp spokesman confirmed Cephas’ death last night, which was first reported by The (Baltimore) Sun. The Sun reported Cephas collapsed while getting ready for work, citing Cephas’ high school coach, Stan Waterman.
Cephas was a forward for the Terps from 1997-2001, averaging 1.2 points and 1.1 rebounds per game. He was part of the team that went to the Final Four before losing to Duke.
“LaRon Cephas was an integral part of our 2001 Final Four team. His attitude and dedication was something coaches wish every player had,” coach Gary Williams said in an e-mail sent by the team spokesman. “You don’t have good teams without people such us LaRon Cephas in your program.”
Cephas had been working as athletic director at the Bates Boys & Girls Club of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County.
“He was one of my favorite players in 18 years as head coach at the University of Maryland,” Williams said.
