The graduate student who killed one of his roommates and injured another in an off-campus murder-suicide briefly worked for University Police, spokesman Maj. Marc Limansky said.
Dayvon Maurice Green — a 23-year-old graduate student who shot and killed Stephen Alex Rane, a 22-year-old undergraduate student, and injured a third roommate, also an undergraduate student — served as a police aide for two weeks, Limansky said, from Aug. 28 to Sept. 11. He missed two consecutive shifts without an excuse before he was fired, Limansky said.
The surviving victim was released from the hospital Wednesday, police said, and is resting comfortably at home; an aunt and cousin told The Washington Post that 22-year-old Neal Oa of Frederick was recovering, but police declined to release his name.
Green did not have access to weapons while serving with the department, Limansky said. Police aides cannot call officers directly; instead, they have radios that can access dispatch, which can then call an officer.
Green suffered from a mental illness for at least a year, family members told police. Police declined to specify the illness, but Green had been prescribed medication, said Julie Parker, Prince George’s County Police spokeswoman.
University Police did not know about Green’s condition, Limansky said. All potential employees undergo a criminal background check, Limansky said, and they did not find anything wrong with Green’s.
“Everything was very normal,” Limansky said. “There was no indication of any problems whatsoever.”
