Pink Floyd was a pioneering force in the psychedelic movement. The bandùs music has been hailed as legendary and groundbreaking.

Coupled with the bandùs unique sound was elaborate live shows featuring all sorts of lights, videos projections and pyrotechnics. Although the band has stopped touring and is pretty much disbanded (they recently reunited for a Live8 show) tribute bands are plentiful, some of which attempt to recreate the live Pink Floyd experience.

Several Species brings “The Pink Floyd Laser Light Experience” to Baltimore this Saturday. The 11-piece band brings a repertoire of more than 50 songs, including those from Pink Floydùs most critically acclaimed albums such as “Dark Side of the Moon” and “The Wall”.

The band takes its name from the Pink Floyd song “Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict,” from the Ummagumma album. The song consists of noises from a Celtic pict with rhythmic noises of cave animals in the background.

The concert comes at an emotionally potent time for Pink Floyd fans. Original guitarist and lead vocalist Syd Barrett died at the age of 60 on July 11.

Barrett formed the band in 1965 with bassist Roger Waters, drummer Nick Mason and keyboardist Richard Wright. He wrote much of the bandùs early material, but David Gilmour later replaced him when Barrett became mentally unstable.

Heùs considered a cult hero, and the music world is mourning his death. “The Pink Floyd Laser Light Experience” Featuring Several Species will perform at the Pier Six concert pavilion in Baltimore Saturday at 8 p.m. Tickets start at $20.
