On June 28, a gunman broke into the office of The Capital Gazette in Annapolis and opened fire, killing five people. Three of them had deep ties to the University of Maryland: Rob Hiaasen, a journalism lecturer, and Gerald Fischman and John McNamara, both university and Diamondback alumni.
The shooting shook the university community, and hundreds of mourners flocked to memorial services at the university’s Memorial Chapel and an Owings Mills nature center. In the wake of heartbreak, The Capital Gazette’s owner endowed a scholarship fund for journalism students at the university.
Below is The Diamondback’s complete coverage of the shooting and its fallout.
