On Jan. 19, the Terrapins wrestling team reached a low point. They lost to Virginia Tech, 24-9, their seventh loss in eight matches. With the season more than halfway over, the Terps appeared to be a far cry from the team they said they would be.
But since a Jan. 24 18-15 win at North Carolina, things have turned around for the Terps. With last night’s 35-3 shellacking of George Mason, the Terps finished the season on a four-match winning streak.
The Terps (9-8, 3-3) thoroughly dominated the Patriots all night, their only loss coming from 157-pound Danny Orem. They recorded two falls and two major decisions, overwhelming George Mason on its Senior Night.
The 125-pound Paul O’Neil earned a 16-6 major decision over Bill Prochniewski, continuing his string of solid performances. Last weekend, he held his own against American’s then-No. 7 David Terao, falling 8-6. Despite O’Neil’s successes, coach Kerry McCoy still said that 125-pound Billy Rappo likely will start at that weight class at the ACC Championships.
The 133-pound Tyler Goodwin also provided production for the Terps in the lower weights, recording a 9-2 win. His brother, 149-pound Frank Goodwin also chipped in, notching a 12-3 major decision.
With the regular season completed, the Terps’ victories at the lower and middleweight classes tonight are a good sign. With postseason play looming, they will need production across the lineup if they hope to compete for the conference title.
The Terps once again performed well at the heavyweight classes. The 174-pound Ty Snook and No. 1 184-pound Jimmy Sheptock had falls.
When the final national rankings are released, Sheptock will probably still be the top-ranked wrestler in the nation. His stiffest challenge for the national title might be Penn State’s Ed Ruth, the two-time defending NCAA champion.
While Sheptock’s run has been impressive, he has not fared well against Ruth in the past, falling to Ruth both times they wrestled — 11-4 and 7-4.
While the Terps’ success did come against unranked opponents, they’ve made strides in recent weeks. Throughout the season, McCoy emphasized the importance of performing well entering March, when the ACC and NCAA championships are scheduled to take place.
Now, with the regular season behind the Terps and February winding down, they’ll have the opportunity to stretch their success into the season’s most important month.
