Bring on the bread
Every day, most people can eat a sandwich for lunch and they don’t even think about it. However, between the taste of gluten free bread, and the lack of accessibility to it, sandwiches have become a rare option for me.
However, I have learned two very exciting things over the past couple of weeks. One is that the Diner on North Campus now has gluten free sandwiches made in the refrigerator next to Sprouts.
Most recently I have tried their ham and cheese, egg salad, and turkey and I have not been disappointed yet. They are premade, so it is finally a lunch that is quick and easy and more than just a salad every day.
Another fantastic gluten-free find: Jason’s Deli has a gluten free menu. It has gluten free bread for sandwiches and also gluten free soups and salads. Between the soups and the bread, I didn’t know what to be more excited about.
Jason’s Deli lists four gluten free soups, and all of the options for your gluten free sandwich. The same day that I called and confirmed that they had the right bread I went to go get my first sandwich; it was delicious. They even have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on the Kid’s Menu and I can’t remember the last time I had good one of those.
If you are a vegetarian, going to a deli might not seem like a first choice, unless you want a salad. However, Jason’s also provides a vegetarian menu. There are five different soup options and a few sandwich and wrap options. They also provide the chance to build your own veggie sandwich, even though the options are not available on the menu. There are also two pasta dishes that can be requested without chicken.
Jason’s Deli is making huge strides for people with different dietary needs, even though it is not openly advertised. It is provided on their website, but not in the store unless you ask for it. Asking questions makes a huge difference because I thought my only option would always be a salad, and now I am anxiously awaiting my first good peanut butter and jelly sandwich in years.
