Creative Commons, a cafe serving snacks, coffee and other drinks, opened Monday in Tawes Hall, joining 11 other campus cafes operated by Dining Services, Dining Services spokesman Bart Hipple said.

The cafe sits on Tawes’ first floor, which is home to the American studies and English departments. It’s open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is connected to a seating area where students can socialize or study, Hipple said.

Junior English major Joon Kwak said the cafe was a “great addition” to the building.

“Personally, I spend most of my time here at Tawes, and sometimes when I’m feeling hungry, I usually just go down to Stamp because that’s the closest thing,” Kwak said. “Since this has come up, I’ve just come downstairs or just studied here, which is very convenient.”

Creative Commons will accept Terp Bucks this semester and dining dollars in the fall when University of Maryland moves to an anytime-dining program, Hipple said. Customers can also pay with Terrapin Express, cash and credit cards.

Joseph Tolker, a senior English major, said he will not frequent the cafe as the semester comes to a close.

“I probably wouldn’t use it because I eat at home, because I don’t want to spend money,” he said.

Dining Services also plans to open an Asian-themed cafe within the year in the renovated H.J. Patterson Hall, and the department will renovate the Applause cafe in the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center over the summer, Hipple said.
