An undergraduate student survived a four-story fall from the Mowatt Lane parking garage early Sunday morning, suffering serious injuries before he was rushed to a nearby hospital, police said.
Senior criminology major Zach Evans found the fallen student beside the north side of the garage and called 911 at 2:25 a.m. University Police arrived a minute later, and an ambulance arrived at 2:33 a.m.
Though University Police spokesman Paul Dillon said it’s too early to determine whether the student was intoxicated, several student witnesses said he appeared drunk.
“[Zach] said it looked like someone was dangling from the railing, like holding on, and they fell,” Zach’s roommate, senior journalism major Carlos Olazagasti, said.
Olazagasti said he was getting ready for bed when he saw the red and blue lights of the police cars and headed outside.
Evans could not be reached for comment last night, but Olazagasti said he heard several accounts of the fall when he arrived at the scene at about 2:40 a.m.
“I heard one person talking [who] said he lived in Commons 6,” Olazagasti said. “He said he heard a girl scream and then heard a thump and looked out and just saw this kid lying on the grass, limp.”
The student is currently at Prince George’s Hospital Center, Dillon said.
Dillon said the incident is under investigation and could not provide further details.
