A fire broke out in the McDonald’s on Route 1 Thursday morning, leaving the restaurant with a burned roof and possibly more damage, fire officials said.

Prince George’s Fire Department responded to the restaurant at about 12 p.m. to find the the roof and ductwork enflamed. Fire officials learned the fire began when the deep fryer overheated or came in contact with an open flame, PGFD spokesman Mark Brady said.

While ventilation is in place to control accidents like this, Brady said the fire still managed to spread into the ducting system and reach the roof. Brady estimated the fire burned about 15 percent of the roof.

After closing down a lane of traffic nearby, firefighters put out the fire in 15 minutes by tearing down the roof and spraying it with water.

One woman suffered injuries from the smoke and was transported to a hospital, but is in good condition, Brady said.

As for the building, its interior or electrical system may have been damaged by the water, Brady said.
