It’s finally here. 3/14/15, 9:26 a.m. The ultimate Pi Day. The quintessential nerdtastic celebration. An excuse to eat gooey desserts for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Unfortunately, the universe is screwing with us. First off, the annual Honors College Pi Day celebration is on the wrong day, as Pi Day isn’t until the first Saturday of spring break. And realistically, even the most devoted math geek won’t get up and make their own pie in time for a 9:26 a.m. meal on a Saturday. To make matters worse, there’s a 90 percent chance of rain.
It’s a trifecta made for lazy days. Fortunately, for such occasions, people have invented microwave mug recipes — even for pie. This weekend, my friends and I field-tested a couple different recipes to give you a leg up on your pajama-featuring celebrations.
Pumpkin Mug Pie No. 1
Pumpkin pie lends itself easily to the microwave, even if you’re making a whole pie. However, if we’re talking no-effort spring-break food, you have two good options. The first, from The Paleo Mama, is only slightly cakier than the real thing. Our pies took four to five minutes of microwave time, which is longer than the recipe suggestion, but it’s well worth the wait — everyone wanted seconds.

Pumpkin Mug Pie No. 2
The second option, from The Kitchn, uses a bit less pumpkin. The result is decidedly seasonal but has an eggier texture and flavor. We all agreed it didn’t make the best dessert, but my friend Jenn said, “It could make a really good breakfast pie.”
9:26 a.m., here we come.

Cherry Mug Pie
This one became an improv dish. We started out with this strawberry mug pie recipe, but as we didn’t have strawberries, puff pastries, or any desire to wait 30 minutes while they baked in the oven, we went off-script. We employed the cookie crumble crust from The Paleo Mama’s pumpkin mug pie and substituted a generous handful of frozen cherries for the filling, using the recipe’s ratios. Then we popped the resulting creation in the microwave for several two-minute intervals. The result was almost identical to real pie: gooey, sugary, and buttery.

Apple Mug Pie
Personally, I would do anything for homemade apple pie, so I had high hopes for a quick single-serving version. Unfortunately, the recipe we tried from Pretty Prudent was pretty much a mug of warm apples and cookie crumbs. Not that cookies and warm apples aren’t tasty, but they are distinctly un-pie-like. Maybe it needed more quality time in the microwave.

Mississippi Mug Pie
We didn’t have the ingredients to try Hungry Girl’s chocolatey creation, but a creamier version of those wildly popular chocolate mug cakes sounds pretty great to me. If you give it a try, please send pictures (and samples)!
