Mark Turgeon

Rutgers transfer Eli Carter, who the Terrapins men’s basketball team targeted as a replacement for departed guard Pe’Shon Howard, announced via Twitter Tuesday that he will attend Florida in 2013.

Carter decided to transfer from the New Jersey school following coach Mike Rice’s firing and narrowed his options down to either the Gators or the Terps. The rising junior led Rutgers in scoring in each of the past two seasons.

Coach Mark Turgeon seems to be in search of a point guard since Howard decided to transfer in early April. Carter, who averaged 14.9 points and 2.1 assists last season, was an attractive option because he is expected to apply for a wavier from the NCAA and may be able to play next season.

Now that Carter is headed to Gainesville, Fla., the Terps can turn their attention to attracting George Mason transfer Vertrail Vaughns or Memphis transfer Antonio Barton. Both guards are considering playing in College Park next season.
