Netflix
Every so often, the Netflix gods decide to grace us with something new to binge on. It’s as if they know most of us have seen every episode of The Office three times and gotten past the Orange is the New Black phase.
This December is particularly exciting with the addition of 47 movies and shows (34 of which will be out in time to help us put off studying for finals).
Some of the more well-known items include American Horror Story: Coven, Almost Famous, American Beauty and Sharknado 2: The Second One.
Perhaps the most recognizable newcomer is The Wolf of Wall Street, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a power-hungry, corrupt New York stockbroker.
If you enjoyed Will Ferrell’s antics as Ron Burgundy, the incompetent news anchor with perfect hair, then you might be happy to know Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues is available, too.
The list also includes some obscure picks that could be worth a shot.
There’s also The Trip to Italy, a comedy about two friends’ road trip, meal by meal, around the European country. It’s the sequel to The Trip (2010), and if you want to try something new, the movie looks pretty promising.
If dramas and romance are more your thing, consider Labor Day. When a single mother (Kate Winslet) gives a wounded stranger (Josh Brolin) a ride in her car, she doesn’t realize it will be the start of something new. It’s an emotional love story with exceptional acting and a detailed plot.
To avoid giving us too much of a good thing, Netflix also has decided to pull some favorites. Dirty Dancing, Mission Impossible III, and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas headed out Dec. 1. Don’t worry though — it seems most of the cut movies were obscure, pre-1990s films. Netflix was nice enough to spare what you’d actually want to watch.
Netflix original Marco Polo was also released today. The show focuses on the explorer’s early adventures. The trailer, which was released in October, promises the historical drama will be filled with plenty of blood, sex and drugs.
Speaking of Netflix originals, Netflix last week finally made the House of Cards announcement we’ve all been waiting for. The third season of the political drama will be released in its entirety on Feb. 27. Take the day off from classes, eat a whole pizza and watch Frank Underwood manhandle the country — Eppley and homework will be there tomorrow.
Until then, however, you can explore the updated world of Netflix while trying to avoid holiday family events. And while you’re cramming for finals next week, you can have a little peace of mind knowing that when tests are over, Netflix will be waiting for some quality time.
