The Terrapins softball team seems in need of a jolt. Wins in only two of its past 10 games would make that obvious to anyone.

There is good news, though: George Mason’s arrival in town for a doubleheader today comes not a moment too soon.

The Patriots arrive in College Park only 10-24. So though the Terps (18-14) are falling fast, they insist their season is not yet lost.

“I think it’s just another test,” coach Laura Watten said last week. “It’s just being able to go through the season and learn some different things about ourselves.”

After a rough road trip in Florida, the Terps returned home and suffered a three-game sweep at the hands of Virginia Tech. They were outscored decisively, 17-6, in the series, a common theme as their losses have mounted.

Watten has expressed a desire to “start fresh and start new,” a sentiment the Terps could use after falling to a tie for last place in the ACC with NC State.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t get easier after the Patriots leave town. The Terps will travel to Atlanta for a weekend set with Georgia Tech (23-16), and another bad series could place the Terps too far from the ACC’s leaders to recover.

Still, Watten’s leadership under trying times has led to a different outlook.

“We haven’t peaked yet,” she said. “And that’s a good thing.”
