The Internet exploded on Wednesday because Nintendo finally announced what fans have been screaming for: Pokemon Ruby and Pokemon Sapphire remakes.
They dropped the bomb through a short YouTube video that features nothing more than the cover art and release date. Just like Pokemon X and Y, the game will have a global release, but this time it will be in November.
Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are remakes of the third generation games first made for GameBoy Advance.
Following these games came the first set of remakes, FireRed and LeafGreen. After this, each new generation platform received a set of remakes. However, when the fifth generation came along and everyone was ready for Ruby and Sapphire remakes, they were never announced when Pokemon Black and White were released in 2010, the next release was not until X and Y in 2013.
Fans were relatively outraged, though many Pokemon fans think that the third generation games were the weakest of the series. They claimed that too much of the game was spent on water and that all the musicr sounded like it was played solely on a trumpet. While these fans are right, there is much to love about the underestimated Hoenn region, and experiencing it in 3DS graphics is going to be beautiful.
Pokemon X and Y brought about many new game mechanics that will definitely be used in the remakes including 3D graphics, mega evolutions, and sped up EV training (If you don’t know what the last one is, you should look into it). However, since the latest games are so full of new content, fans are worried that the remakes might cut out some things, like trainer customization or Pokemon Amie (the ability to pet and feed your Pokemon).
Cutting out too much new content is unlikely. Downgrading via getting rid of trainer customization would be huge, especially since customization is something players have wanted since game one. However, the world of Hoenn is expanse — The game features one of the biggest maps in a Pokemon series with the ability to go underwater in a large amount of the sea routes.
The Ruby and Sapphire series is well known for the other groundbreaking ideas it brought to the Pokemon games. It gave the players the first in-game cutscene not on wiki page, Pokemon contests, the ability to create and decorate their own secret bases and more. Many are particularly excited for a redone version of the secret bases. Previously, there was a low limit on how many items could be placed in your base; players are expecting that amount to be raised dramatically.
Not too much is known about the remakes, but there is plenty being speculated. Even if you’re not down with water routes and trumpets, you should check out the short trailer Nintendo released below.
