Injuries continued to pile up for the Terrapins football team in the first half of its matchup at Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon.
Early in the second quarter, running back Brandon Ross took an option pitch from quarterback C.J. Brown around the left side. At the end of the play, a Wake Forest player rolled up on wide receiver Deon Long’s ankle. The Terps’ receptions leader collapsed to the ground in pain. Wide receiver Stefon Diggs was also slow to get up after the play.
Alex Prewitt of The Washington Post reported Long was placed into a ambulance with a cast or brace on his right leg. Athletic director Kevin Anderson checked on him before the ambulance left.
It was also reported that he was receiving x-rays at a local emergency room, and coach Randy Edsall reportedly said he thought Long had a broken ankle.
The Terps entered halftime trailing the Demon Deacons, 24-3.
The Wake Forest defense set the game’s tone early. On the Terps’ opening possession, Demon Deacons defensive tackle Nikita Whitlock sacked Brown for a 14-yard loss to start a Terps three-and-out.
After the subsequent punt, Wake Forest drove 36 yards on five plays before running back Josh Harris punched it in from one-yard out to take a 7-0 lead. At the end of the quarter — during which Terps kicker Brad Craddock missed a 35-yard field goal attempt — kicker Chad Hedlund hit a career-long 51-yard field goal to push the lead to 10-0.
The Terps responded in the second quarter with a 13-play, 67-yard march that ended with a 23-yard field goal by Craddock.
But that was the last time the Terps would threaten.
Two Brown interceptions led to two more Demon Deacons touchdowns. With 5:21 left in the first half, quarterback Tanner Price rushed in from four yards out. Four minutes later, star wide receiver Michael Campanaro tossed a pass to Price for the final scoring of the first half.
In the first half, Brown was 14-of-23 for 132 yards and two interceptions. Ross had seven rushes for 39 yards while running back Albert Reid had five rushes for 32 yards. Diggs had five catches for 36 yards, and Long had four catches for 43 yards.
