The University of Maryland has now seen at least 22 confirmed cases of students with adenovirus, according to a campuswide email sent last week.
This count includes students who have since recovered from the virus and were sick earlier in November, the email read.
In initial announcements about the virus, the university said at least one virus sample had tested positive for Adenovirus 7, a more dangerous form. As of the Nov. 30 email, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that four specimens it tested contained the strain.
Freshman Olivia Paregol died Nov. 18 after contracting a serious strain of the disease. Paregol had Crohn’s disease, and the medicine she took for it weakened her immune system, her father said. He has questioned whether the rampant mold in her Elkton dorm played a role, which the university has cast doubt on.
