Terrapins baseball right-hander Mike Shawaryn accepted an invitation Monday to join the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team this summer.

Shawaryn is the second Terps student-athlete to compete on a USA baseball team and the first since Pete Sinopoli played in the 1979 Pan American games. Shawaryn is one of 24 players on the roster, and the team plans to play at least 17 games in June and July.

“To be able to represent your country is incredible,” Shawaryn said in a release. “It’s a humbling moment to be considered one of the 24 best players and wear the USA across your chest. It was a lifelong dream, and I haven’t really comprehended it yet. It’s a huge honor.”

In Game 1 of Friday’s doubleheader against Purdue, Shawaryn broke the school career wins record with his 21st victory as a Terp. He ranks third in the Big Ten in ERA (1.52), second in opponent’s batting average (.187) and first in strikeouts (92).

The sophomore hurler earned Big Ten Pitcher of the Week four times this season, and on April 9, was named to the midseason watch list for the Golden Spikes Award, which is given annually to the top amateur player in the country.

Last season, Shawaryn earned Freshman All-American honors after setting a single-season record with 11 wins. His performance on the hill helped lead the program to its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Super Regionals.

The Collegiate National Team will meet June 18 and play its first game two days later. The tour concludes with a five-game series against Cuba.
