The Terrapin softball team came into Wednesday’s doubleheader undefeated in extra-inning games this season. After beating George Washington in game one, they found themselves in extra innings in game two.

Only this time, the Terps felt like they didn’t belong – even after a two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh sent the game to extra innings.

“We should have been executing from the very beginning,” coach Laura Watten said. “Yes, it was good to come back; however, we had a missed signal in that inning, and we had situations where we could have won.”

The Terps’ come-from-behind rally was quickly overcome by George Washington’s three runs in the eighth, as the Colonials won game two 6-4.

Since the two teams were playing an out-of-conference game, the contest went to international rules, where a runner is placed on second base at the beginning of each extra inning. The Colonials took no time exploiting this benefit.

Katie Miller bunted pinch-runner Tori Sensi over to third, putting her just 60 feet away from a run. Nikki Brooks followed with a run-scoring single, as did Hilary King two batters later. After a pair of walks and passed balls, the Colonials added their third run of the inning.

In the bottom half of the eighth, the Terps could only score Medley McGuire, their pre-placed runner on second, on a single from Amanda D’Attilio, who led off the inning.

“It was a tough loss, because we all know we could have beat them easily,” junior Abbey Welch said. “But you have to bounce back. We have to keep going.”

Welch was one of the big reasons the Terps were even in the second game. Due to the absence of cleanup hitter Nikki Smith (concussion) from the lineup, Watten shook the Terps’ batting order up, putting Welch’s hot bat in the two-hole. Welch didn’t disappoint as she hit a triple in the bottom of the seventh to knock in Jenny Belak and cut the two-run deficit in half.

Second baseman Keri Lounge, who moved from second to third in the Terps’ order, followed with a line-drive rocket up the middle, scoring Welch and tying the game at 3-3. Lounge was the big bat in the Terps’ earlier game as well, as she homered and had three RBI in the 4-0 victory.

But the timely hitting form Welch and Lounge could not overcome a lack of offensive output from the rest of the Terps’ lineup.

“We have good hitters, and we should be able to score without Nikki in the lineup,” Watten said.
