Terrapins men’s basketball point guard Pe’Shon Howard was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct early Sunday morning, University Police spokesman Capt. Marc Limansky said.
Howard was issued a citation, but was not held this morning. He was seen “taunting” an individual outside of Shanghai Café on Route 1, Limansky said. Howard will appear in court whenever a date is set and, if convicted, the incident will go on his record, Limansky added.
Limansky said police responded to a fight outside of Shanghai, but did not know whether Howard was involved in the fight. In front of a crowd of more than 30 patrons, Howard allegedly began taunting the aggressor involved in the fight, Limansky said.
Officers reportedly asked Howard to step back and to stop instigating, but Howard continued what he was doing, Limansky said.
“They thought that I was instigating,” Howard said in a phone interview. “But people around me said I wasn’t.”
Howard was released early this morning. There was no indication that the incident involved alcohol, Limansky said.
Howard’s arrest is the basketball program’s second this year. Assistant coach Dalonte Hill was arrested in January for suspicion of driving under the influence.
