WVU’s Shelton Gibson trucks Maryland cheerleader

West Virginia wide receiver Shelton Gibson’s 41-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter of Saturday’s game against the Terrapins football team was greatly overshadowed by what happened after.

The redshirt sophomore ran through the back of the end zone and into a crowd of Terps cheerleaders after hauling in quarterback Skyler Howard’s throw. But after weaving his way through a couple of people, he collided with one cheerleader who was standing with her back to the end zone, sending her tumbling to the turf.

After his team’s victory, Gibson spoke about what happened (quotes via Craig Meyer of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette).

“They cleared out and I thought everything was good,” he said when asked about when he first saw the girl he ran into. “I put my head down and noticed she was right there. I tried to stop, but it was too late.”

The TV broadcast cut away shortly after he crashed into her, making it seem like he might have ignored her. Gibson, however, said he apologized.

“I went back and said I was sorry,” he said. “But I heard she went right back into the tunnel right after it. I was thinking about it at halftime, I was like ‘Man, I hope I didn’t mess up that girl or anything like that.’”

No updates on the cheerleader’s condition have been made public.
