University Police responded to reports of theft, fraud and vandalism, among other incidents, in the past week, according to police reports.
Theft
University Police responded to a theft in progress at 12:43 a.m. Feb. 9 at the Cambridge Community Center.
While officers interviewed a witness, a man was seen inside the convenience store matching that description.
The man had fled on foot and then returned to the store. He was intoxicated, according to the report.
Police identified the man as 18-year-old Alexander Reardon of Ellicott City. He was arrested and charged with theft of less than $100.
University Police responded to the Commons Shop at 4:30 p.m. Feb. 7 for a reported theft. Between 3:30 p.m. and the time of the response, two men entered the store without enough money to pay for their items.
The suspects asked the people behind them in line for money, and store employees told them this was not allowed. The two men then took the items without paying.
This incident is still under investigation.
Fraud
On Feb. 3 at 10:41 a.m., University Police responded to the South Campus Dining Hall for a report of fraud.
Between noon on Feb. 2 and the time of police response, an individual handed a $20 bill to a cashier.
The cashier tested the bill to see if it was counterfeit. As the cashier called for the manager, the perpetrator left the scene.
The counterfeit bill was obtained by University Police, and the Secret Service was contacted to move forward with the case, according to the report.
“Anytime we get a fake or fraudulent bill we contact [the Secret Service] because their speciality is currency,” police spokeswoman Sgt. Rosanne Hoaas said. “They will generally look into it further.”
Vandalism
On Feb. 4 at 12:29 p.m., University Police responded to Commons 2 for a report of vandalism.
An alarm for an interior door was going off, and police noticed that the locking mechanism for the door was damaged. It appeared that someone had used force in attempt to open the door, according to the report.
Police believe this incident took place that same day between noon and the time of police response. Officers plan to review area camera footage as the investigation continues.
On Feb. 6 at 8:39 a.m., University Police responded to Commons 1 for a vandalism report. Between 4:30 p.m. Feb. 5 and the time police arrived Feb. 6, two interior walls were damaged within the lounge area of the building.
The walls were adjacent to each other, and the damage appeared to have been caused by a kick, according to the report. The investigation remains active, and police are looking at footage from cameras in the area.
University Police responded to Montgomery Hall on Feb. 7 at 1:20 p.m. for a report of vandalism. An officer observed a hole in an interior hallway wall. Police believe the incident took place between midnight and 2:30 a.m. on the day of the report.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are reviewing exterior cameras for more evidence.
