James Gist and the U.S. Pan American Games men’s basketball game finished 5th in the tournament, a disappointing finish for a team that harbored medal aspirations.
Gist was a reserve for the team, averaging 5.4 points and 2 rebounds per game while shooting 48 percent from the field.
The U.S. team was put together by a blue-ribbon panel of college coaches and included some of the best collegiate players in the country. Jay Wright, coach of Villanova, served as the head coach for the team.
Despite the star power, the U.S. dropped the first two games as the team struggled in the backcourt with turnovers and in the frontcourt with defending the perimeter.
The U.S. lost its first two games in group play to Uruguay and Panama by scores of 81-72 and 75-67, respectively.
However, the team rebounded and beat Argentina in the final game in the preliminary round before beating the U.S. Virgin Islands and Panama in the consolation matches.
Brazil won the gold medal, beating Puerto Rico 86-65 in the final.
