While most Maryland students were making the trek home for Thanksgiving, the Terrapins men’s basketball team was having a grand old time in Cancun, Mexico.

As one of eight teams participating in the Cancun Challenge, the Terps were put up at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya. Wherever you spent your Thanksgiving, this place was better.

According to the hotel’s website, amenities at the all-inclusive resort include things like:

-a private beach, “nestled along the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea,” and described as “the perfect environment to snorkel, kayak, swim, and relax.”

-the Rock Spa, which is “the largest spa in the Caribbean with 75 treatment rooms …. steam rooms, hydrotherapy current pools, lavish surroundings, and even a personal spa butler…”

-a Music Lab, where guests can get training in rock performance, DJing, or music video filming. Imagine Melo Trimble singing lead to Aerosmith while backed by Diamond Stone and Jake Layman.

Other amenities: at least six different pools and a “natural sea cove.” And that’s just the water-related stuff. The resort also has an outrageous golf course and numerous restaurants and bars.

During the trip, the team got to experience Mexican culture at the tournament’s banquet.

As for the basketball part of the adventure, the Terps eked out a 77-66 victory over Illinois State before easily dispatching Rhode Island, 86-63. After a four-day stay, they returned home on Thanksgiving Day and had a team meal.

Players then had a chance to get some rest ahead of Friday night’s game against Cleveland State, which they won 80-63.

Now that they’re back in College Park, the Terps take on No. 9 North Carolina in Chapel Hill Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. ET on ESPN in the most-anticipated game left on the team’s non-conference schedule.
