Senior biology and science education major

It is a general rule of mine not to make New Year’s resolutions. I have nothing against them, but all of my previous attempts to resolve bad habits starting Jan. 1 have been unsuccessful. As with any imperfect human, there are plenty of things I want to address on the journey of self-improvement, though, and spring 2015 is the time to do it.

This semester, I want to focus on the relationships in my life. This could be due to an acute case of senioritis that is pulling me away from prioritizing academic improvement, but I like to think, in my wise “old” age, I finally have realized that what I value most are the people in my life. As nostalgia sets in and I think about the wonderful people whom I will no longer get to see after graduation, I have decided to adopt the YOLO mentality when it comes to my friendships.

Sure, staying up until 3 a.m. swapping stories with my roommates the night before a full day of student teaching seems like poor time management, but it was actually a conscious choice to value people more than my sleep schedule. Giving up Jeopardy a few nights a week is quite a reasonable price to pay for an evening spent with friends. I probably won’t remember Alex Trebek telling me Iceland was probably discovered by the Irish in the eighth century, but you can bet I will hold on to the memory of gloriously defeating the previously undefeated Scene It? champion.

Spending time with those I love is only half of my new semester’s resolution. The second, and arguably more important part, is letting my friends know how much I appreciate them.
