Create cherished memories without traveling very far. Our campus isn’t just home to Byrd Stadium, Testudo and thousands of students but also a handful of private little retreats that are perfect for a few intimate moments before, between or after classes.
1. Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center
Directly in front of the alumni center is a gated venue equipped with a water fountain, wooden benches and beautiful blankets of flowers. Although the alumni center is no secret, few students go there to sit. So if you’re looking for a moment of secluded romance, this may be just the place for you.
2. Kissing Tunnel
James Levin / The Diamondback
Under Regents Drive near the Memorial Chapel is a small tunnel that leads to Chapel Field. Although it has not upheld its tradition, according to Outlook Online, the university faculty and staff newspaper, students at this university in the 1940s and ’50s valued the kissing tunnel as an honorary last act for a date night. Any couple that passed through the tunnel had to share a kiss.
3. McKeldin Library
James Levin / The Diamondback
This may not sound like an ideal place for romance but the top floors of the library are silent and usually empty. Get lost in the stacks and enjoy a private study session.
4. Garden of Reflection and Remembrance
James Levin / The Diamondback
Tucked behind the Memorial Chapel is a small, peaceful garden. Walk the labyrinth or relax on the shaded benches as you take in some campus scenery, chat and cuddle at this picturesque spot.
5. South Campus Dining Hall rooftop
James Levin / The Diamondback
Get a bird’s-eye view of campus when you venture to the rooftop of the dining hall. Many aren’t aware that there’s a rooftop garden accessible to students. How’s that for a romantic hideout?
6. Paint Branch Trail
Embark on a short journey with your lover to the outskirts of the campus. Paint Branch Trail is a winding pathway that leads to a bridge overlooking a stream. Nestled behind a heap of trees, it’s the perfect reason to get out, talk and enjoy nature’s beauty.
