Late in the first quarter against Minnesota on Saturday, Maryland football safety Darnell Savage laid a big hit on wide receiver Rashod Bateman to prevent a third-down conversion but was slow to get up and eventually walked to the locker room.
Savage never returned to Maryland’s 42-13 win.
After trainers helped Savage up, they walked him to the red medical tent on the Terps’ sideline. Shortly after, Savage was brought to the locker room. It was unclear exactly what Savage’s ailment was, but he looked unstable and trainers assisted him as he walked after the big hit.
The senior defensive back has arguably been Maryland’s best defensive player this year. Savage returned an interception for a touchdown last week against Temple and has 16 tackles this year, with a team-high four for a loss.
Savage was an All-Big Ten honorable mention last year, when he recorded 59 tackles and tied for a team-best three interceptions. The Newark, Delaware, native was a large part of Maryland’s season-opening win over then-No. 23 Texas, picking up six tackles with two for a loss.
