A former Maryland football defensive back was charged with first-degree robbery as part of a shooting in West Virginia on April 27 .
Tayvon Nelson was arrested and charged with first-degree robbery in connection with an incident at a West Virginia residence, according to MetroNews, a West Virginia news outlet. Nelson, who enrolled at Maryland in 2023, is set to appear in court on May 9 for a preliminary hearing.
The 19-year-old enrolled as a freshman before transferring to Marshall at the end the 2024 season.

Officers found two victims who had suffered gunshot wounds, according to WSAZ on Channel 3, an NBC affiliate TV station. Nelson was dismissed from Marshall University’s football program after the incident, the station reported.
Nelson and another person suffered gunshot wounds during the incident, according to WSAZ. Another Marshall student was also charged with first-degree robbery in connection with the crime, according to the station.
Nelson, a former three-star cornerback, committed to Maryland out of Canarsie High School in Brooklyn, New York, in 2022. Coach Michael Locksley offered him a scholarship in June of 2022. He transferred to Marshall in December 2024.
Maryland athletics declined to comment on Nelson’s arrest. The Huntington police department did not respond to a phone call asking for comment.
