A portable recording device was found inside a fifth floor single-use bathroom in Johnson-Whittle Hall Tuesday night, according to an email from Resident Life director Dennis Passarella-George to residents.
University of Maryland Police received a report on Tuesday night that a student found the device, according to UMPD spokesperson Lt. Rosanne Hoaas. UMPD is investigating the event as a voyeur incident, Hoaas wrote in a statement to The Diamondback.
UMPD collected the recording device and did not find any additional devices during a canvas of the rest of the building’s bathrooms, Hoaas wrote. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, she wrote.
This university wrote in a statement to The Diamondback Wednesday evening that it is collaborating with UMPD to provide resources and support university community members.
“We are taking additional precautions, and nothing is more important than the safety and wellbeing of our students,” the statement read.
The incident was also reported to this university’s civil rights and sexual misconduct office, Passarella-George wrote in the email to Johnson-Whittle residents.
UMPD and Resident Life have increased their patrols in the hall, according to Passarella-George’s email.
Passarella-George encouraged residents to report any concerning incidents to university police and Resident Life staff.
The dorm’s residents will be able to meet Resident Life staff and UMPD on Thursday to ask questions about the incident, according to the email.
